This game is Bruno Faidutti's preferred game. But, one will be able to readily to object that its opinion is not the most objective... It has to be said that we both are large fans of deduction games (remember, Miss Rose in the living room with the candlestick...) and that we find that they do not havethe place they deserve on the ludic scene. Therefore, we took a great pleasure conceiving this game which denotes a little from its predecessors. Some principal concepts : The story takes place in an abbey and the objective of the game is to determine the culprit of an appalling series of murder. At the beginning of the game, the card of one monk is put aside and defines the identity of the murderer. Each monk is defined by his characteristics: the order to which he belongs (fransiscain, Dominican or bénédictain), its row (brother, beginner or reverend father) and a number of details like its stoutness (large or thin), its pilosity (bearded or beardless) or even its headgear (with or without cap!). The really original idea (and which we are really proud of!) it is to have introduced intuition and improvisation into this kind of game where usually the mechanisms of deduction are rather rigorous. Go back in time and remember the famous Cluédo: in order to progress in the enigma resolution, players had tosuggest a solution that the other players could cancel by showing one of the cards. As the game goes, by crossing the cards already seen, one was able to manage to determine the 3 possible corresponding cards to resolve the enigma. |

| It should
also be specified that the players evolve on the plan of an abbey and that
to each particular place an action corresponds: going to the library makes
possible to consult the books and thus to pick an event card, going into
the chapter room makes possible to make a revelation or a charge... there
are very different ways to carry out its investigation and it is not rare
to see completely opposite play styles clashing: scientific player who eliminate
the suspects with method & intuititive player who supposes that if this
player ask such question it is because he must be in possession of such
cards. Obviously the second approach is more random, but if it works well
it can be proven much faster. Up to you to choose how you want to play! |

This game was our
first collaboration with Bruno Faidutti. It was a true pleasure, and very
instructive for me. We had two completely different approach for this
game : Bruno likes the fun and cahotic side, the surprises and the bounces
whereas I rather appreciate the mechanisms which leave a beautiful share
to the reflexion, with the deduction and where the chance does not prevail
the action of the players. It must be for these reasons that the Mystery
odf the Abbey a mixture also surprising of calculated strategy and impromptu
blows of bluff. |
