Presentation:

This game joins the new Jeux Descartes "games for 2" serie
Each player is a pirat, trying to get the most interesting areas (rum, treasure) on a small lost island

Game's mechanisms:

Island is divided in 3 kinds of spaces:
- Normal spaces which gives 10 victory points to their owner at end of the game
- Rum spaces >>> 30 victory points
- Trasure spaces > 50 victory points

At end of the game, each player will get an additionnal bonus for the teritories he controls (a territory is a group of spaces touching each other on at least one side). This larger the territory is, the highest the bonus is !

Each player will have to face difficult choices: trying to get the most interesting spaces, or trying to built the largest territory as possible...

Strategy will have to be adapted to the cards you have in your hands. These cards allow, for most of them, to add a new pirat token on a free board space, but for some of thems, give you special abilities, like recuiting ennemy pirat tokens, pushing back at sea ennemy pirats.. and so on...ouch.. pirats semms not to be very friendly !!

Game is based on strategy and bluff.. Players chooses 2, 3 or 4 cards secretly, and reveal them at the same time.On each card, you'll find a number, from 1 to 44, and the effect of the cards has to be resolved from the smallest to highest number (that means that a player can have the possibilitie to do many actions consecutively)

At the end, you obtain a small game for 2 players, mixing bluff (choice of the cards is secret and simultaneous), tactic (after cards have been revealed, how to optimize your possibilities), and strategy (all your actions have to fit with your final target which is to get most victory points than your opponent at end of the game)

Just some examples of Cyril St-Blancat's illustrations for special cards.
My feeling is that pirat background has been well brought out

recruiter is as underhand as possible....

Game's history :

This is my second game.
Untill i was trying to find an editor for "sans foi ni loi", i bought "king of roses", the Dirk HENN's game

I was immediatly convicted by the nice material, and by the idea to try to do the largest territory as possible. But i was not convicted by the game itself. Not enough possibilities, not enough choices. I didn't thought it was a bad game, just it didn't fit wth what i like.

My first idea was to try to find some rules variants, to be able to play with these nice board and tokens. But after spendind some time, i obtained as a result a completly new game, very far from the initial one. You will recognize some "standard" mechanisms (pushing comes from abalone, recriter comes from othello). The only thing the two games have in commun consists in territories wich give victory points depens=ding on their total surface.

At this time, my new game was only mathematic game, without any background. It was just called "conquest". To add some heat, and dream, pirat background came very fast, and was the occasion to add some more special cards, like epidemic..

During this time, discussions concerning "Sans foi ni loi" where in progress with Jeux Descartes, and a meeting with them was for me the opportunity to present "Drake & Drake".And I had the luck that they were looking for a new serie af games specificly for 2 players...
